Franklin earns two wins for Brescia in doubleheader sweep

Brescia sophomore Shelby Franklin (Franklin-Simpson Class of 2014) led the Bearcats to a doubleheader softball sweep against visiting Ohio Christian on Monday.
Franklin picked up the wins in both games for Brescia. In the Bearcats’ 8-7 win in Game 1, Franklin came on in relief and pitched the final 4 2/3 innings to earn the victory. She allowed two earned runs off five hits and three walks while striking out four. Brescia junior Morgan Manning (Butler County Class of 2013) had a strong day at the plate in the opener, going 2 for 4 with a run scored and two RBIs.
Franklin got the start in the circle for Game 2, and she pitched all seven innings in a 4-1 victory for the complete-game win. Franklin allowed just six hits and one walk for one earned run. She struck out three. Manning scored a run in the nightcap.
Brescia (5-15 overall) is back in action Thursday with a road doubleheader at Asbury.

Southeastern Illinois College sophomore right-hander Jacob Vaughan fired a complete-game effort in Monday’s 4-1 win over Lindenwood University-Belleville.
Vaughan (South Warren Class of 2013) allowed just one unearned run on four hits to earn the win. He struck out 10 batters. Southeastern Illinois College freshman John Halcomb (Greenwood Class of 2015) added a hit in the win.
Southwestern Illinois completed the doubleheader sweep with a 5-3 win in the nightcap. Vaughan, playing designated hitter, was 1 for 2 with two runs scored and a stolen base, while Halcomb added a hit and a stolen base in the win.
Southeastern Illinois College (13-16) is back in action Tuesday for a home doubleheader against Morthland (Ill.).
