The Warren East baseball team kept rolling along with a 9-4 win at Warren Central on Monday.

Jonathan Biggs had a home run and five RBIs to lead Warren East (8-3 overall, 1-0 District 14) in its District 14 opener. Since starting the season with a pair of losses, the Raiders have won eight out of nine.

Biggs delivered a two-out, two-run double in the first to get the Raiders on the board.

Warren Central (5-6, 2-2) got a run back in the bottom of the inning, but Biggs struck again in the third with a three-run home run to left center field – part of a four-run rally that pushed the lead to 6-1.

“Any time you help the team out and get a win, especially the first district win, it’s always a big one,” Biggs said.

The Dragons got a two-run homer from Logan Bell in the bottom of the third, but Warren East starter Davion Downey was able to settle in after that. The left-hander went six innings, allowing three runs on four hits with 12 strikeouts.

“We got a really good outing from Davion,” Warren East coach Wes Sanford said. “After the first inning, he really settled in and threw strikes. He was trying to overthrow a little bit. I think he was juiced up because it was the first district game. Davion is a pretty good horse for us, so I expect a lot of him when he is out there on the mound.”

Warren East added three insurance runs in the top of the seventh to get some distance.

Biggs was walked to load the bases with two outs, and Austin Hymer followed with a two-run single and Matt Alford added an RBI single to stretch the lead to 9-3.

“We’re trying to play for an extra run there the last couple of innings,” Sanford said. “We didn’t want to get in a position where a grand slam could beat us. To get those three extra runs there was huge for us.”

The Dragons scratched across a run in the bottom of the inning, but the comeback bid ended there.

“We kicked the ball around a little bit more than we usually do tonight,” Warren Central coach Adam Biller said. “We always tell our guys, ‘Give your pitcher a chance. Give him that confidence that he knows that he can put the ball in play and let you guys make the play behind him.’ We had a few blunders in the first couple of innings that set us back a little bit, but we will bounce back.”

Biggs and Zach White had two hits each for Warren East, while Ty Stringfield had three runs scored.

Noah Thornberry had three hits for the Dragons, while Bell added two hits.

The series continues at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday at Warren Central.
