WKU coach Ray Harper said on his radio show Monday night that the Tops are hoping to wear the retro uniforms in one of five remaining home games at E.A. Diddle Arena.
“We would like to possibly wear those,” Harper said.
Harper said WKU has discussed wearing the uniforms for an upcoming game at which the 1971 Final Four team will be honored. Harper said he believes the game is either Charlotte on Feb. 20 or Southern Miss on March 3.
The Tops must get permission from both the opposing team and the Conference USA office to wear the red uniforms at home instead of the traditional whites, Harper said.
WKU debuted the uniforms Saturday at UTEP as the Miners celebrated the 50th anniversary of their 1966 national championship as Texas Western.
The jerseys say “Western Kentucky” on the front and feature a background that includes imagery of Diddle Arena, a red towel, retired jerseys and various accomplishments from the past.
