Lost somewhat in the chaos of Western Kentucky’s 41-38 home win over Louisiana Tech on Thursday was a steady effort from WKU kicker Garrett Schwettman.

The senior made all four of his field-goal attempts, including a 46-yarder in the third quarter and a key 29-yard make with 1:15 to play to push the lead to two scores.

Schwettman moved into second place in WKU history with 292 career points. He has also made 54 straight point-after attempts, tying for the fourth-longest streak in program history. The 46-yard field goal tied his career long.

“He’s Mr. Reliable,” WKU coach Jeff Brohm said. “It was a tremendous job by him. He’s consistent. He makes kicks when we need them.”

The Toppers also got strong play in other areas of special teams.

Redshirt sophomore Kylen Towner returned a kickoff 98 yards for a score in the first quarter, and he returned three punts with a career long of 32 yards. Junior Joseph Occhipinti punted four times for an average of 33.5 yards, with a long of 43 and one inside Louisiana Tech’s 20.

“Really, our special teams has played well,” Brohm said. “We knew in order to win these last two games, we had to play good in all three segments – offense, defense and special teams. Our special teams gave a great effort today. The kick return was huge. The field goals were huge, and recovering the (onside kick), that was big. Complete team effort, and I think our team knows that has to happen for us to win.”
