Outage leaving thousands AT&T customers without service

UPDATED 6 P.M.: AT&T has pinpointed hardware issue and is working to restore service.
UPDATED 4:46 P.M.: AT&T issued the following statement regarding an outage:
“Some customers across parts of the Southeast are experiencing wireline and wireless service issues. We are investigating the cause and working as quickly as possible to restore service. We apologize for this inconvenience.”
EARLIER: Many AT&T cellphone users in southcentral Kentucky are having trouble completing calls or sending texts on their phones this afternoon.
Outage reports for AT&T grew to 11,379 by 3:45 p.m. today.
There is still no word from AT&T officials about what has caused the outage which impacted cell phone service for the carrier in at least five states, including in Kentucky.
Other carriers in the state have also been impacted, although none to the extent that AT&T has.
