Yonny Chirinos threw a career-high six innings and gave up only one hit in the Bowling Green Hot Rods’ 4-2 win Monday over the host West Michigan Whitecaps.

With the victory, Bowling Green (10-9 second half, 47-42) split the four-game set with the Whitecaps (11-7, 44-43) after dropping the first two contests and ended its six-game road trip with a 3-3 record.

After allowing a two-out single in the bottom of the first to Mike Gerber, Chirinos (2-0) sat down 16 of the final 17 batters he faced – interrupted only by a Rashad Brown walk in the third. The Venezuelan struck out four and has not given up a run over his first 11 innings in the Midwest League.

Chirinos benefited from 14 hits – including an 8-for-14 clip from the Hot Rods’ top three batters in Thomas Milone, Riley Unroe and Bralin Jackson – with 10 of those coming over the first four innings against Whitecaps starter Fernando Perez in assuming a 4-0 lead.

Jackson and Unroe had three hits each, while Milone and Carter Burgess added two apiece. Grant Kay doubled in the fourth to increase his hitting streak to 10 games, becoming the fifth Hot Rod to collect a double-digit hitting streak this season.
