HILLTOPPER FOCUS: Big day leads to slew of new offers for WKU targets Wright, Young

Apollo coach Steve Barker looks prophetic in hindsight about his rising senior star, 6-foot-4 shooting guard Eli Wright.

“If he plays the way he’s capable of playing, he’ll blow up in these next couple of weeks,” Barker said Tuesday. “Although I don’t know how much bigger he can get, unless you’re Michigan States and your North Carolinas of the world start jumping in. If he plays the way he can, it certainly wakes everyone up.”

Wright woke up spectators Friday with a 26-point effort for the Hoop Dreams AAU program in the adidas Gauntlet Series Finale in Suwanee, Ga.

That showing earned Wright new offers from Mississippi State, USC, South Florida and DePaul, according to Hoop Dreams. 2017 wing Trace Young, who is Wright’s teammate with Hoop Dreams and Apollo, also earned offers from USC, South Florida and DePaul.

The extra attention is nothing new for Wright.

He previously trimmed his list to 10 schools, which included WKU, Alabama, Clemson, Florida, Middle Tennessee, Ohio State, Oklahoma State, Texas, Virginia Tech and Wake Forest. But that was before a slew of newcomers joined the chase.

“I really don’t pay no attention to it, because it can get overwhelming if you think about it too much,” Wright told the Daily News on Wednesday. “I just kind of let it chill.”

Wright told the Daily News on Wednesday that he’s considering attending prep school for his senior year, and if he does, he’ll likely commit before the November signing period.

As for Young, a 6-8 forward, the new offers were big additions to his previous list of WKU, Wright State, Cleveland State, Morehead State and Samford.

Young was disappointed with his seven-point, six-rebound effort Wednesday, but he caught coaches’ attention Friday with 11 points, six boards, three assists, two steals and no turnovers in 17 minutes.
