HILLTOPPER FOCUS: WKU’s Diedrick drafted by Washington Nationals in 29th round

Western Kentucky senior Philip Diedrick was selected Wednesday by the Washington Nationals with the 884th overall pick in the 29th round of the MLB draft.

Diedrick, a 6-foot-2 outfielder and designated hitter from Ajax, Ontario, Canada, is WKU’s second draft pick of the week. Junior outfielder Anderson Miller went in the third round Tuesday to the Kansas City Royals.

Diedrick appeared in all 52 games for the Hilltoppers in 2015 and started 49 of them, hitting . 291 with 52 hits, nine doubles, eight home runs and 22 RBIs.

He started 33 games as WKU’s primary designated hitter as a junior after transferring from Connors State College. He was a four-star athlete in high school.

The draft continues today through round 40.
