Western Kentucky basketball coach Ray Harper officially announced five more spring signees Monday, including Tennessee transfer forward Willie Carmichael.

WKU also announced the signings of Aaron Cosby, Kristaps Gluditis, Nathan Smith and Anton Waters, all of whom Harper discussed at length in an appearance last week in Glasgow.

But Carmichael is the most recent pick-up for the Tops after announcing his intention to transfer to WKU on Friday. He was scheduled to arrive on campus last weekend.

The 6-foot-8, 210-pound forward recently completed his freshman season with the Volunteers and will have three years of eligibility remaining after sitting out one season per NCAA rules.

Carmichael, originally from Apopka, Fla., appeared in 32 games for Tennessee last season and started 19 – the most on the team among freshmen. He averaged three points and 2.3 rebounds over 14.8 minutes per game while shooting 51.6 percent from the field.

“Willie is an unbelievable athlete with a lot of potential,” Harper said in a news release. “He is a quick leaper, and he has good instincts on the court. The year he has to sit out will be very beneficial for him, and he will get bigger and stronger and improve even more on his fundamentals.”

Carmichael’s addition would have put WKU one player over the scholarship limit of 13 based on incoming players and returning scholarship athletes, but the program said Monday that fifth-year senior forward Nigel Snipes will be covered by his graduate assistant position with the school’s Kinesiology, Recreation and Sport department, and therefore won’t use one of the team’s scholarships.
