The possibility of having a president from Bowling Green brings an excitement to the upcoming 2016 presidential race.

Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., gave a rousing “take back our country” speech on Tuesday afternoon at the Galt House in Louisville. He has laid the groundwork for a strong run, and his appeal, which crosses political parties, should make for an interesting campaign.

Polls will be cranking out more public opinion in the wake of Paul’s announcement.

Paul met with the Daily News editorial board late Monday morning and provided frank answers to questions regarding his take on domestic and foreign policies. He is branded by some opponents, perhaps unfairly, as an isolationist. He pledged Monday to “defend our country” and said he supports a strong defense, two areas undoubtedly that will be broached by his opponents.

After Sen. Mitch McConnell’s much-watched campaign victory over Democrat Alison Lundergan Grimes, the nation will again focus on Kentucky as Paul begins his campaign in earnest.

It will be interesting to see how his appeal will translate into votes from GOP faithful, African-Americans and Democrats.

It would appear his fundraising and his ability to garner widespread support outside the GOP are keys to him having success.

Regardless, it will be a campaign worth watching closely.
