Hot Rods announce opening day roster

Two of the top 10 prospects in the Tampa Bay Rays’ system will be part of the opening day roster for the Bowling Green Hot Rods, the team announced today.
Right-handed pitcher Brent Honeywell – the No. 8 prospect in the Rays’ system, according to Baseball America – will anchor the pitching staff, while No. 10 prospect infielder Casey Gillaspie will lead the way for the position players,

Honeywell was a second-round pick in June, going 2-1 with a 1.07 ERA with Princeton (W.Va.) in the rookie Appalachian League last season.
Joining Honeywell on the pitching staff is Kyle Bird, Damion Carroll, Henry Centeno, Edwin Fierro, Hyrum Formo, Enderson Franco, Mike Franco, Edgar Gomez, Greg Harris, Brian Miller, Chris Pike and Hunter Wood.
Gillaspie, the younger brother of Chicago White Sox third baseman Conor Gillaspie, was a first-round pick by the Rays in June. He appeared in 71 games with Hudson Valley (N.Y.) in the Low A short-season New York/Penn league last year, hitting .262 with seven homers and 42 RBIs.
Gillaspie is one of two first-rounders on the opening day roster, along with catcher Nick Ciuffo – a first-round pick in 2013.
The rest of the position players include catcher Mac James, infielders Coty Blanchard, Jace Conrad, Grant Kay, Cristian Toribio, Riley Unroe, and outfielders Bralin Jackson, Hunter Lockwood, Thomas Milone and Justin Williams.
The Hot Rods open the season at South Bend (Ind.) at 6:05 p.m. CDT Thursday.
