Kristen Klawitter and her husband, Joe, and her two children, Josie and Shae, all of Chicago, stuck on I-65 for hours.

Kristen Klawitter and her husband, Joe, and her two children, Josie and Shae, all of Chicago, had planned to make it to Tampa, Fla., today.

Interstate 65 had other plans.

“We left our hotel in Louisville about (8:30) this morning,” Klawitter said. “We were on the highway for about 10 minutes when traffic stopped. We have only gotten a mile from that spot since then.”

Klawitter said she wished they would have had the entrance ramps blocked and they would have stayed put.

At 2:30 p.m., Klawitter feared that her children’s patience and food may be running out. “They have been doing amazing so far,” she noted of the 2- and 8 year-olds.

“We’ve been trying to get some answers about what is going on,” she said.

Klawitter said Kentucky State Police have been gracious and brought them water, but really haven’t been able to provide them with answers.

They are stuck on I-65 just south of Ky. 243 near Belmont in Bullitt County. More than 200 semi trucks and multiple vehicles were in the crush of vehicles.

“We might get out of the car and play Frisbee in a minute,” she said.

“We just moved about 1/3 mile, first time we’ve moved in 2 1/2 to 3 hours,” Klawitter said in a text message.

The family left their home in Chicago to beat the crowds to Florida ahead of the start of many spring breaks.
