Garmon named Glasgow coach

GLASGOW — As a 17-year-old student at Glasgow, Jeff Garmon dreamed of being the Scotties’ head football coach.
That dream became a reality Thursday for the 45-year-old Garmon, who was introduced as the successor to Rick Wood.
“I’m just so excited, so happy, and humble for the opportunity to be the head coach at Glasgow,” Garmon said. “Coach Wood left this in pretty good shape. We are going to try to maintain what he has built here the last five or six years and try to do our best to win as many ballgames as we can on Friday.”
Garmon is no stranger to the Glasgow program.
In addition to playing for the Scotties in the mid-1980s, Garmon has been an assistant for the past five seasons, serving as the defensive coordinator.
Glasgow has 50 wins in that span, including an 8-4 finish last year, losing to eventual Class 2A state champion DeSales in the second round of the playoffs.
Garmon served as an assistant at Corbin, bringing 24 years of football coaching experience into the upcoming season.
“We don’t really talk a whole lot about wins and losses,” Garmon said. “We talk about the process it takes to get those wins and losses. We are going to continue to focus on the fundamentals of football. To me, it’s a real simple game. It’s about blocking and tackling, taking care of the football, and being a great teammate. You do those things, you are usually going to have a successful program and a good season.”
Garmon said not much will change during the transition.
“We had a plan in place that we were looking at three years ago, where we were headed with this program,” Garmon said. “We are right on course with where we want to be. We know we are going to be short-handed in the senior department, but we have some really good sophomores, freshmen and eighth-graders coming. We feel like we are going to be able to compete with most people.”
The biggest adjustment will be realignment in Class 2A.
In addition to DeSales and Christian Academy of Louisville, perennial power Mayfield will move up from Class A this season. Monroe County moves down from 3A and will join Glasgow’s district.
“It’s a tough road,” Garmon said. “If you make it to (the state title game in) Bowling Green, you are going to be pretty good to go through those fellows. That will be the path we have to take. We will have our work cut out for us. We just have to raise our level of play. We can’t make any excuses. We have to continue to work hard and go out and play the games.”
Garmon will also remain as an assistant coach on the Glasgow baseball team. He said he plans on honoring his commitment to be on the coaching staff for the upcoming season.
“My role will change a little bit in the future, but I still see myself continuing to help him in baseball,” Garmon said.
