HILLTOPPER FOCUS: Tops QB Troy Jones leaves program, will transfer after graduating

Western Kentucky is down to three returning quarterbacks for the 2015 season.

One of those three is sixth-year senior starter Brandon Doughty, but the position’s numbers have dwindled after Wednesday’s news that two QBs have left the program.

Rising senior Troy Jones is still enrolled at WKU but plans to transfer and continue his playing career after graduating, according to the school.

The 6-foot-2, 210-pound Baltimore native appeared in three games of reserve duty for WKU in 2014 after transferring from Nassau Community College.

Jones completed 2 of 4 passes for 11 yards for the Tops last season, while also rushing for 35 yards on six attempts.

WKU also announced Wednesday that rising redshirt sophomore quarterback Parker McLeod is no longer with the program.

The 6-3, 195-pound McLeod isn’t listed in WKU’s student database. He did not attend the Hilltoppers’ first team meeting of the semester and has plans to transfer to a school where he will not play football, according to WKU.

McLeod transferred to WKU after redshirting his first year at Alabama in 2013. He would’ve been eligible for the upcoming season, although he would’ve been battling for a backup position behind Doughty.

The Hilltoppers also have Nelson Fishback and Drew Eckels at quarterback for next season. QB Todd Porter transferred from the program earlier in the offseason.

The Hilltoppers picked up a verbal commitment Monday from Lexington Catholic High School quarterback Reese Ryan, who’s rated a three-star prospect by Scout.
