Purples avenge loss to Christian County

The Bowling Green boys’ basketball team doesn’t have many losses this season, but it avenged one Tuesday night.

The Purples (15-4) used a 17-0 run in the second quarter to push in front of Christian County, then adjusted to the Colonels’ press in time to hold on for a 64-60 win at BGHS.

“Our guards hadn’t been under siege much,” BG coach D.G. Sherrill said. “They were in live fire, and we hadn’t worked on that much. You saw us make some bad decisions with the basketball, but I was proud of how we stayed with it. They threw everything but the kitchen sink at us, and we came out with the win.”

Bowling Green’s win made up for a 69-62 loss to Christian County on Dec. 31 in the championship of the Meijer Holiday Classic at BGHS.

The Purples nearly overcame a massive deficit in that defeat, but Tuesday, they were the ones who had to stave off Christian County’s comeback efforts and a trap press that got BG out of sorts.

“That’s as much team quickness as we’ve seen,” Sherrill said. “We won’t see anybody that fast the rest of the year, and we haven’t been pressed a lot. … That pressure kind of got them back into it. We were careless with the ball and just kind of threw it into bad spots, dribbled into traps. We have to get better at those things, but nobody in our region presses. It’s a good win for us.”

Christian County (12-6) led by as much as seven in the first quarter and was still in front 22-18 in the second when Bowling Green made its push.

The Purples scored the last 17 points of the half, capped by junior guard Perry Ayers’ three-point play to make it 35-12 at the break.

Christian County made 2 of 15 shots in the second quarter and didn’t have a field goal for the final 6:16 of the frame.

“I could count on one hand how many minutes of zone we’d played before tonight,” Sherrill said. “When I watched them on film, I thought they would shoot jump shots because they’re young. Early in the game, we went on that big run because they were shooting every shot. If I could’ve drawn up, ‘This is what I want Christian County to do,’ they were doing that.”

After a dunk by BG sophomore forward Terry Taylor made it 43-29 with 2:56 left in the third quarter, Christian County went on an 11-2 run to pull within five.

But no matter how close the Colonels got – with some help from the Purples, who made just 18 of 31 free throws – they never managed to get over the hump.

They got within 63-60 with one minute to play and got the ball back after a charge against Bowling Green. But Christian County missed two 3-pointers at the other end, and BG senior guard Tucker Sine made 1 of 2 free throws to ice the victory.

“We felt great about it,” said Taylor, who led the Purples with 14 points and seven rebounds. “They’re a good team, and we just wanted to come out and play hard and get the win against them. We were able to drive the ball, dish it and rebound as a team.”

Bowling Green shot 51 percent from the floor – despite not making a 3-pointer – and outrebounded Christian County 41-26.

Senior guard Malik Carothers and sophomore guard Deangelo Wilson each had 11 points. Four Purples grabbed at least seven rebounds apiece.

CCHS guard Tyrik Edwards, who scored 39 points in the teams’ first meeting, led the Colonels with 18 points.

Bowling Green returns to District 14 play at 7:30 p.m. Friday against Warren East. The Purples dropped to third in the Daily News Area Top 10 this week after an overtime loss to Warren Central last week.

“We’re growing up,” Sherrill said. “All the accolades and talk at the beginning of the year about us was completely false. We’ve got two kids who got significant minutes last year, and we’re playing four sophomores a lot. We’ve got a lot of kids getting great experience, and hopefully we’ll get the growth we need before our season runs out on us.”

The Lady Purples (16-5) came out blazing in the first quarter and used that fast start to notch their sixth straight win.

Bowling Green made 8 of 10 shots in the opening frame, including its first four 3-pointers, and surged to a 25-9 lead that it didn’t relinquish.

“I thought the start was really good,” BG coach LaVonda Johnson said. “We were flowing a lot better. Then we kind of let down, and we’re working on that. We want to put four good quarters together. But we’re making progress and starting to get better, and as a coach, that’s all I can ask for.”

Bowling Green’s scoring pace slowed in the second and third quarters – even getting outscored 14-13 in the third – but the Lady Purples finished on a high note with 25 fourth-quarter points.

Eleven players scored for BG, led by sophomore guard Heavyn Gray’s 15 points. Junior forward Oneisha Turner had 11 points and six rebounds, and junior center Tamia Matthews added 10 points.

Johnson said she’s been tinkering with her lineup to find better cohesion.

Bowling Green, which hasn’t lost since falling to district foe South Warren on Jan. 2, hosts Warren East at 6 p.m. Friday.

“I’ve been mixing up the lineup a lot, just looking for some players to be more consistent – some more leadership,” Johnson said. “I want to make everybody more hungry, but I’m starting to see some people blossom. We’ll get some stuff set, but we’re just trying to find our rhythm a little bit more. The girls are listening, accepting their roles and doing the things we need to do as a team.”

Ge’Naisha Robinson paced Christian County (6-7) with 18 points and 12 rebounds.
