Kara Williams Glenn of Bowling Green said her years in Girl Scouts paid off. With a heater, blankets, sleeping bag and tent, she was fully prepared for the long hours and cold temperatures she endured in order to get doughnuts.

Glenn arrived at Krispy Kreme at 798 Campbell Lane at 8 a.m. Monday and hung out with other Krispy Kreme fans that evening during a pre-grand opening party outside the building.

Krispy Kreme opened at 6 a.m. today.

There will be a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 2p.m.

Glenn was the first person in line, which means she gets a dozen free original glazed doughnuts each week for a year.

The 99 people in line after Glenn will receive a dozen free doughnuts each month for a year. The first 150 people in line got a Krispy Kreme T-shirt.

Glenn said she plans to take the doughnuts to her co-workers at Star Technologies.

“I want to be the Monday morning rock star,” Glenn said. “Everyone at Star Technologies has been by all day to bring me hot chocolate and potty breaks because they know where those doughnuts are going.”

Glenn isn’t the only one in her family who likes to be first. Her husband, Kenn, was first in line at the AT&T store by Panera Bread on Campbell Lane when the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus came out in September. He bought her a chai latte, just as she did for him while he waited for the new iPhone.

“I like my phones. She likes her doughnuts,” her husband said.

Glenn talked with Moose Guzman of Bowling Green while she waited. “We don’t know each other. We’re making friends right here,” Glenn said.

Guzman is a sophomore at Western Kentucky University and used to live in Florida with his mother, stepfather, eight brothers and three sisters. He said they went to a Krispy Kreme near their house every week.

“We moved here and they didn’t have a Krispy Kreme, so probably tomorrow my family and I will come here,” Guzman said.

Evelyn Stewart of Bowling Green became a Krispy Kreme ambassador two weeks ago after responding to a post on Krispy Kreme’s Facebook page requesting people to tell their best Krispy Kreme story for a chance to become an ambassador.

Stewart said she loved going to Krispy Kreme when it was in Bowling Green where Whitt’s Barbecue is now on Campbell Lane. As an ambassador, Stewart said she would pass out coupons to people waiting in line this morning. Although Stewart couldn’t stand in line for free doughnuts, she planned to buy some for her co-workers at American Bank & Trust.

“If I don’t show up for work with doughnuts, I better not show up,” Stewart said.

Kara Palm, marketing coordinator for U.S./Canadian franchisees for Krispy Kreme, said Monday night the company expected about 150 people to show up because that’s a typical number for grand openings. Palm said today that 160 people were at the store at 6 a.m.

“We find communities where the demand meets our product,” Palm said.

Bowling Green’s size, WKU’s presence and a large population of young people made the city a good fit for the company.

By 7 p.m. Monday, Glenn was the only person signed up in line. About 15 other people mingled around the building listening to music from a DJ, taking pictures in a photo booth and playing cornhole on a Krispy Kreme board. Doughnuts weren’t provided, but free Chick-fil-A sandwiches, water and coffee were on hand.

Although the DJ left at 9 p.m. Monday, Glenn stuck around, determined to get what she came for. “There is nothing like a hot Krispy Kreme,” Glenn said.

Krispy Kreme hired 70 people. The store is open from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sundays through Thursdays and from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays. The drive-through is open 24 hours.
