The Western Kentucky football program will announce at 3 p.m. today that it has accepted an invitation to play in the inaugural Bahamas Bowl scheduled for 11 a.m. CST Dec. 24 in Nassau, Bahamas. The game will be televised live by ESPN.
The Hilltoppers (7-5) will play Central Michigan (7-5) from the Mid-American Conference. It is the team’s second appearance in a Football Bowl Subdivision game, having lost to Central Michigan 24-21 in 2012 in the Little Caesars Pizza Bowl in Detroit. The Chippewas lost their season finale 32-20 to Western Michigan.
The Bahamas Bowl is the first bowl game to be played outside the United States since the 2010 International Bowl in Toronto and first FBS bowl game outside of the U.S. and Canada since the 1937 Bacardi Bowl in Havana, Cuba.
WKU is on a four-game winning streak and last played Nov. 28 when it upset then-No. 19 Marshall 67-66 in overtime. The Tops have won at least seven games each of the past four seasons and are 8-1 their last nine games played in November.
Teams for the contest are scheduled to arrive in Nassau on Dec. 20 and will be staying at the Atlantis resort.
