Bowl-bound Toppers set to learn fate

The Western Kentucky football team will learn its bowl destination and opponent today.

The Hilltoppers (7-5) are one of five Conference USA teams locked into a bowl game because of league rules. Marshall (11-1), Louisiana Tech (8-4), Texas El Paso (7-5) and Rice (7-5) are also guaranteed postseason spots. WKU athletic director Todd Stewart and coach Jeff Brohm are scheduled to announce the team’s bowl game at 3 p.m. today.

Of the five C-USA bowl games available (New Mexico Bowl, Hawaii Bowl, Bahamas Bowl, Boca Raton Bowl and Heart of Dallas Bowl), the Tops seem to be most likely to be selected to play in the Bahamas against a team from the Mid-American Conference at 11 a.m. CST Dec. 24 in Nassau, Bahamas, at Thomas A. Robinson National Stadium. That game is the first college football game to be played outside the United States since the 2010 International Bowl in Toronto.

Western Kentucky’s destination could change based on the result of the Boise State vs. Fresno State game that had no been completed as of press time Saturday.

A Boise State win may vacate a Mountain West Conference spot in the New Orleans Bowl, a spot that would then be filled by a C-USA program. But that program is not expected to be WKU. A Fresno State win would mean a C-USA program would not fill the bowl in New Orleans, shuffling where other teams end up today.

The Hilltoppers could also land in either the Hawaii Bowl or the Boca Raton Bowl. The Boca Raton Bowl, played in Boca Raton, Fla., on the campus of Florida Atlantic University, is scheduled for 5 p.m. CST Dec. 23 and involves a MAC team as well. The Hawaii Bowl, scheduled for 7 p.m. CST Dec. 24, involves a C-USA and Mountain West Conference team.

The Hilltoppers are allotted 15 practices before the game, and Conference USA helps cover costs for charter planes and hotel rooms for all teams involved in the postseason.

Western Kentucky’s only other bowl appearance in the FBS era came in 2012, a 24-21 loss to Central Michigan in the Little Caesars Pizza Bowl in Detroit. The Tops have won at least seven games four straight seasons.
