- Miranda Pederson/Daily News Laura Beth McKew of Bowling Green inspects newly arrived clothing Monday as she helps prepare for the Duck-Duck-Goose consignment sale at Potter Children's Home. The sale begins Wednesday.
More than 400 consigners, mostly local moms, will have children’s clothing, toys and accessories for sale Wednesday through Saturday at the giant Duck-Duck-Goose consignment event.
Teressa Shrewsbury and friend, Monica Taylor, both of Bowling Green, love consignment stores so they decided four years ago to have the twice yearly sale. It’s at Potter Children’s Home.
While it is a business for the two women – they keep 30 percent and consigners get 70 percent – there is a charitable aspect of what they do. Any end-of-sale donations go to Potter Children’s Home, so that items can be used by families living on site or used for the children’s home sales, Shrewsbury said.
They also have a new mother’s club for the first 125 registered mothers, who get a private shopping experience and are given goody bags.
And on Friday, nonprofit organizations can sign up through the group’s website. Ten percent of the proceeds on items purchased by someone using a form goes to that group.
“We’ve had scout groups and some schools in the past take advantage of that,” Shrewsbury said.
Consigners price and tag their own merchandise; the two women and volunteers organize it.
“We typically recommend that they price things at 30 percent to 40 percent of retail,” she said. “The only exceptions are the new things with store tags on them. We have two women who own boutiques, and they have brought in their overstock, so some of those are 50 percent off and others are lower.”
Shrewsbury said there are a variety of items for sale, and clothing is for children from birth to size 16.
Typically 1,500 or more shoppers come to the sale that is from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday, with Saturday being half-price day. The facility is at 2350 Nashville Road.
