Toppers crushed 10-2 at Lipscomb

Lipscomb exploded for nine of its 10 runs in a pair of big innings Wednesday en route to a 10-2 win over Western Kentucky in Nashville.

Lipscomb (5-8) struck with a big second inning, plating five runs off of four hits and one Hilltopper error. Bison second baseman Mike Korte provided the initial blow with a two-run single up the middle, while teammates Jonathan Allison and Drew Adams recorded two-out RBIs in Lipscomb’s big inning.

The Hilltoppers (7-5) tried to chip away in the third inning when junior shortstop Cody Wofford pelted an RBI triple into the right-center field gap to plate senior outfielder David Simmons.

Junior first baseman Ryan Church slapped a leadoff double in the fourth inning and came around to score later in the frame courtesy of senior outfielder Regan Flaherty’s RBI single that trimmed the Lipscomb advantage to 5-2.

The Bison tacked on four more runs in the bottom of the seventh with RBI hits from Josh Lee, Griffin Moore and Hunter Hanks to inflict the deciding damage.

Junior right-hander Brandon Allen (0-3) received his first career starting nod and was solid in the first, third and fourth innings as he struck out two and only allowed two hits in those innings. Allen was responsible for Lipscomb’s five-run second inning. Sophomore Jackson Sowell was effective in relief behind Allen, working two scoreless innings with a pair of strikeouts.

WKU returns to Nick Denes Field on Friday as it hosts Illinois for a three-game series.
