Richard Miller of Warren County is joining a crowded field of contenders to replace Magistrate Terry Young when he steps down at the end of his current term as Fifth District Magistrate.

Young made the announcement that he wouldn’t run again in November, and there are currently six candidates for the office including Miller. He is running as a Republican.

Miller filed last week to run for the position. He has never held a political office.

He said he’s been considering a run for magistrate for several years, but saw a chance to potentially move into political office when Young announced he would not run again.

“I … thought it was a chance to show I can do that kind of job,” he said.

Miller said he wants to improve the quality of life for people in the Fifth District by doing things such as improving roads – addressing issues such as potholes, ensuring road signs are placed properly and improving drainage when storms occur.

He also wants to work with the sheriff’s office to see the district patrolled more.

“Bowling Green and South Central is probably the best region of Kentucky to live in, that’s what I think,” Miller said.

One of his goals will be to see more people move into the Fifth District, he said.

That could involve things such as adding more parks and improving cable and Internet services in the area, Miller said.

Overall, things are going well for the county, he said, though he’d like to see some services improved.

“The growth is coming to Bowling Green,” Miller said.

Miller graduated from Bowling Green High School and has worked for Republic Services for about 24 years.

He said he is a people person and he wants to make the concerns and needs of the people in his district heard.

Democrats Fred Haley of the Browning area, Mark Young of the Anna community and Malcolm Cherry of the Cedar Grove precinct and Republicans Mark Haley of the Browning area and Jeffrey Naftel of Warren County have also filed to run for Fifth District magistrate.
