A Bowling Green man accused of stabbing the mother of his child accepted a plea offer three days before he was scheduled to go to trial.

Joshua A. Parker, 22, pleaded guilty Monday in Warren Circuit Court to first-degree assault and fraudulent use of a debit/credit card (less than $500).

Parker’s case had been scheduled to go before a jury Thursday, and he would have faced a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison if he had been found guilty.

In accepting the plea agreement, Parker told Warren Circuit Judge John Grise that he attacked Breanna Tunks with a knife, saying that he caused three cuts to her neck and two deep cuts to her ring and pinky fingers. He also admitted using a debit card belonging to Tunks without her permission.

The incident occurred at Tunks’ Louisville Road apartment Jan. 19, 2013.

Court records show that Tunks was attacked while she was sleeping in her apartment, and then ran to a neighbor’s apartment to call for help.

Tunks identified Parker as her assailant, and Warren County Sheriff’s Office deputies spotted him walking on Louisville Road covered in blood shortly after the stabbing, according to an incident report from the sheriff’s office.

Parker originally told deputies he was involved in a fight with Tunks but denied stabbing her.

Six days after the arrest, a deputy testified in Warren District Court that Parker’s clothes were stained in blood as he was being placed under arrest, and a judge signed an order to seize the clothing Parker was wearing on the day of the arrest as evidence, according to court records.

Parker was released on bond in April pending the outcome of the case. Grise allowed Parker to remain free ahead of his sentencing, which is scheduled for Feb. 10.
