Greenwood freshman midfielder Annie Burd looked like a seasoned veteran during the Lady Gators’ 6-0 win at district rival South Warren on Aug. 29.
Burd helped Greenwood find some breathing room, scoring her first two varsity goals in a six-minute span midway through the first half.
The first goal came when Burd put back a rebound after South Warren goalkeeper Morgan Stumbo was unable to clear a shot. Burd’s second goal came off a corner kick in the 32nd minute that gave Greenwood a 3-0 advantage.
“It’s pretty awesome,” Burd said. “I’ve always dreamed about scoring in a big rival game. This was pretty cool.”
Burd has played in all six games for the Lady Gators this season, helping Greenwood get out to a 4-1-1 start.
Greenwood coach Lindsey Passaglia said she has been impressed with Burd’s play.
“All of our freshmen will contribute this year,” Passaglia said. “They’ve been presented with a challenge and make a difference and today (Burd) did.”
Greenwood will look to extend its win streak to four games at 6:30 p.m. CDT today when it travels to face Louisville Assumption.
