South Warren’s defense picks up another shutout

RUSSELLVILLE — It was another dominating performance for the South Warren football team, who blitzed host Logan County 50-0 on Friday.

One week after blanking Warren East, South Warren (2-0) raced to a 43-point halftime lead, and the defense pitched another shutout – holding the Cougars to 31 total yards.

“I give it to our kids – coming out this week in practice and getting a lot of things done,” South Warren coach Mark Nelson said. “It’s great to have our defense with another shutdown and have the offense move the football.”

The Spartans started slow before steamrolling Logan County (0-2) by halftime.

South Warren’s Jay Eblen fumbled on the first offensive play of the night, but the Spartans had no trouble moving the ball after that.

SWHS scored touchdowns on five straight possessions to take a 35-0 lead.

Four scores came on the ground, two from Joel Iyiegbuniwe, and the other touchdown was a 17-yard connection from Eblen to Drew Wilken on fourth and goal.

Logan County couldn’t keep pace. The Cougars moved the ball on the opening drive, stopped on downs at the South Warren 33, but had trouble moving the ball after that.

Logan had two turnovers in the first half, including a 37-yard interception return from Iyiegbuniwe, and finished with 8 yards of offense – 36 on the ground.

“It was just another game for us,” Iyiegbuniwe said. “We know what we are trying to accomplish this year. That’s what the defense is out there to do. If we can get turnovers and spark anything, that is what we are there for.”

The Spartans emptied the bench in the second half, but scored one more time – when CJ Wilson ran it in from 7 yards out midway through the fourth quarter.

South Warren totaled 327 yards of offense, 179 yards on the ground. Eblen ran for 47 yards and was 3-for-5 passing for 46 yards.

“After the fumble we settled down,” Nelson said. “It wasn’t rocket science. We handed the ball off to our athletes and our line opened up holes. Our running backs run hard and Jay makes great decisions with the veer (offense) and the reads. I’m just happy with the way our guys kept the focus this week, and I look forward to the next challenge.”

Both teams return to action at 7 p.m. Friday.

Logan County will host Franklin-Simpson.

The Spartans host Greenwood – for the first time since Nelson left the Gators to become South Warren’s coach.

“It’s just another football game,” Nelson said. “It doesn’t matter who it is. We just want to improve every week because we have goals we have to reach. It’s the next game and hopefully we will be ready for it.”
