The window of opportunity is open for Warren East’s Hannah Turner.

The senior enters her final high school golf season with a chance to shine after some of the area’s top talent graduated last year.

Turner showed she plans to be in contention Monday, when she shot a 40 on the front nine at Bowling Green Country Club to lead the girls’ contingent after the first round of a two-day district match between the five in-town programs.

“I just looked at it hole by hole and prayed before every shot,” Turner said. “I’ve had my ups and downs, but (the season has) gone pretty well. I’m just hoping for the best.”

If there was ever a time for Turner to reach new heights, it’s this season, after some area turnover. Many of the top players from recent years, such as Jackie VanMeter, Mallory Vaughn and Leslie VanEvery, have moved on.

The second round of the district event is Monday at Indian Hills Country Club.

“It’s wide open, because there were a lot of good golfers who graduated,” Turner said. “But there’s still a lot of good golfers in our region, and they’re going to be good competition.”
