The Western Kentucky football program announced today a new series with Vanderbilt University, a series that includes a home game in 2016.
That contest will mark the first time a current program from the Southeastern Conference has played at Houchens-Smith Stadium. The Hilltoppers are currently 1-16 all-time against SEC opponents, with the lone win coming at Kentucky, 32-31 in overtime, last season.
The series will begin in 2015 at Vanderbilt Stadium in Nashville as part of a true home-and-home agreement. In 2017, WKU will travel back to VU and receive an undisclosed sum of money for doing so.
The two programs have played three times in their respective histories, but the last meeting was back in 1938. The Commodores have won all three games – 52-6 in 1931, 26-0 in 1932 and 12-0 in 1938. Western Kentucky also lost twice to Vandy’s “B” team in 1921 and 1922.
The 2015 schedule for WKU now includes games at Vanderbilt, Indiana and Louisiana State and a home game against Miami (Ohio).
The 2016 schedule currently includes a home game against Vandy and an away game at Miami (Ohio) and the 2017 slate has games at VU and Illinois. Games against Army, formerly scheduled for 2016 and 2017, have been rescheduled for the 2019 and 2021 seasons.
