Unique bar set to open in few weeks

Two Bowling Green businessmen want to further their objective of entertaining people downtown.

Chris Abend and Andrew Cole, owners of Bowling Green Pipe & Cigar, in a little more than two weeks will open 1044 State with the motto of “Shots, First Call & Pub Crawl” at 1044 State St. The two just obtained a liquor license this week for the intimate venue.

The two won’t be the bartenders, even though its hours mostly won’t conflict with their current businesses on Fountain Square Park.

“We want someone who is younger,” Cole said.

“We want this place to be fun and exciting, so we need something more than sullen me or sullen Chris,” he said.

Cole said the two of them brainstormed the idea, which they aren’t aware of existing anywhere else. He cautions that the venue shouldn’t be perceived as a bar.

“We want this to be a gathering place where people will come to have a couple of quick shots to plan what they are going to do the rest of the evening,” he said. “This is going to kind of bring social media to real life.”

To that end, there are two flat screen TVs that will scroll specials and events at partner venues.

“For instance, we might be scrolling what band 440 is going to be featuring after the Concerts in the Park,” he said.

And it won’t be a place where someone can sit and drink all night. In fact, there won’t be any seats in the bright red space, and the place’s standing capacity is 25, but they will probably limit customers to 20 at a given time. They can’t end their night there either, unless it’s an early night. The business will open at 8:30 p.m. and close promptly at midnight.

The shots that he refers to won’t be shots of straight liquor; rather, they will be mixed shots.

“We are going to feature 20 different shots a month, so it will vary,” Cole said. “They might include a Washington apple that is very popular now.”

“That drink includes cranberry juice, whiskey and apple-flavored liqueur. It’s as sweet as it sounds,” Cole said.

“Most of them probably will be on the sweet side,” he said.

The business will accept cash only for the $3 shots and will have an onsite ATM in case people forget to bring money that will make the service quicker, Abend said.

“We want to get people moving on their evening out,” Cole said.

Also part of the business concept is the monthly pub crawl they are planning. Abend hopes to unveil the crawl in September and is still working out details with partner venues, but expects that they also might involve partnering with distributors to feature a new drink or liquor.

“That way, someone can try something before they actually go to a liquor store and purchase it, so it will benefit retailers as well,” Abend said.

He also is developing games that will be available each of the three nights the spot is open (Thursday through Saturday), one of which will be a kind of scavenger hunt for certain drinks. People will need to be able to find someone or themselves enjoying five of 10 select beverages on a list, take a picture and then post it on Instagram, mentioning Shots and the venue where they were and using the appropriate hashtags that will be contained on their scavenger hunt list. Anyone who finds at least five of the 10 will be eligible for a drawing for the next day from a prize either provided by a partner or a nonalcoholic product from a distributor.

Abend said they are going to try to stay on top of the latest social media craze.

“We don’t want people putting something out on Instagram and then have everyone looking at something else,” he said.

Cole said they expect their target is the early 20s crowd – noting that you have to be 21 to enter. Someone will check IDs at the door.

“But we’ve had some moms say that it might be a fun place to start a girls night out,” he said. “They don’t go out much, so this would be a place for them to find out what is going on.”

The planned Aug. 2 opening will feature UV Vodka, which is designing five shots that will be featured during August.
