- Alex Slitz/Daily News South Warren's Wes King (19) pitches the ball during a Region 4 Baseball Tournament game against Glasgow at Nick Denes Field, Monday, May 27, 2013, in Bowling Green, Ky. Glasgow beat South Warren 2-1.
A repeat champion will still have to wait in the Region 4 Baseball Tournament.
Glasgow (22-14) leaned on senior pitcher Cord Glass and its defense Monday, holding off defending champion South Warren 2-1 in the opening round at Western Kentucky University’s Nick Denes Field.
“Cord pitched another great game and kept those guys off stride,” Glasgow coach Sam Royse said. “They put it in play all day long, but fortunately they hit a lot of balls right at us, and we were able to make the plays. We defended pretty good, we pitched real good and we were able to scrap and score two runs and make them stand up.”
The District 15 champion Scotties face Logan County, which beat Metcalfe County on Monday, at 5 p.m. today in the first semifinal at WKU.
Glasgow was eliminated last season in the first round with a 15-0, five-inning loss to Russellville – a game in which Glass started.
But the senior was on point Monday, limiting South Warren (18-15) to five hits and a run with no walks over seven innings.
“It’s huge,” Glass said. “We’ve come down here in years past and haven’t had very much luck, so to make it past this first round means a lot to me and everybody else.”
South Warren’s loss brought its region title defense to an early close.
No team has repeated as Region 4 champion since Allen County-Scottsville in 2006.
“We’re a very young team, and it’s a big stage,” SWHS coach Chris Gage said. “I wasn’t unhappy with the offense approach too much, and on the whole, they flighted the ball pretty well. The (windy) conditions are tough. Any ball in the air is an out.
“Glasgow played very well and fielded the groundballs, and their pitcher didn’t give us anything. The fundamental teams are the ones that win.”
The Scotties got a sacrifice fly from junior center fielder JT Green in the bottom of the first inning and padded their cushion with an RBI double by senior first baseman Carlos Morrison in the fourth.
South Warren sophomore Wes King started on the mound and allowed one run in two innings before giving way to sophomore Cameron Shryock. Shryock went three innings, and senior Travis Hardcastle pitched a scoreless seventh. Glasgow finished with three hits.
Senior second baseman Andrew Vanthournout scored the Spartans’ lone run in the sixth when junior right fielder Jacob Smiley reached base on an error. The Glasgow defense recorded every one of its outs in the field.
“I couldn’t have done this without my team,” Glass said. “I didn’t have a single strikeout today. Every single ball was a putout, so you can’t do it without the team.”
South Warren graduates three seniors in Hardcastle, Vanthournout and third baseman Jacob Vaughan. All three played major roles in last year’s run to the state tournament.
“They put South Warren on the map,” Gage said. “They were part of a core group of players last year that worked hard and put South Warren on the map, so we’re eternally grateful to those guys.”

Logan County 4, Metcalfe County 2
The Cougars (24-10) logged their first region tournament win since 2007 in the day’s opening game. Logan County lost in the first round the last five seasons.
“I’ve been on this field for four years now, and we’ve never got a win,” LCHS senior center fielder Gage Hales said. “It feels great to get a win actually and have a chance.”
Logan County rode a four-run third inning to victory, taking advantage of two errors to start the frame by Metcalfe County (10-20).
After two Cougars reached base on miscues, Hales drove both runs in with a single. Senior catcher Dustin Cartas belted a double to left-center field to plate Hales, and senior left fielder Cody Hunt added an RBI single.
Logan County finished with four hits off Metcalfe County pitcher Billie Clemmons, and Hales was the only Cougar to record multiple hits.
“We should have done better at the plate,” Hales said. “We didn’t have the best game, but we came ready, and I guess all that matters is that we got a ‘W.’ Not every day do we face a 65 mph pitcher. It was definitely tough.
“We’re used to bigger stuff, but we can do better. We’ll be on it in the next game.”
LCHS senior pitcher Blake Gettings allowed five hits and two runs over seven innings with five strikeouts. Metcalfe County’s Jalen Clemmons provided the Hornets’ offense with a two-run single in the fourth.
