The case of a 28-year-old Bowling Green man accused of having a sexual relationship with a 15-year-old girl he coached in volleyball was sent to a Warren County grand jury this morning in Warren District Court.
Brian D. Gifford, 28, 292 Sequoia Way, was arrested Wednesday after a Kentucky State Police investigation revealed that Gifford had sex with the juvenile on multiple occasions within the past month, according to Warren District Court records. Gifford is charged with five counts of third-degree rape.
Gifford waived his right to a preliminary hearing this morning in Judge Brent Potter’s courtroom. The case is expected to be presented to a grand jury within 60 days, said Warren County Commonwealth’s Attorney Chris Cohron.
“Obviously, our main concern at this point is to make sure that there’s not other children that there is inappropriate relationships with,” Cohron said. “If there are, please contact the Kentucky State Police or the Commonwealth’s Attorneys Office.”
Gifford’s attorney, Alan Simpson of Bowling Green, said today he had no comment about the case.
The investigation was initiated by someone who came to KSP Post 3 on Wednesday afternoon to report that Gifford had a sexual relationship with the girl, court records show.
Gifford was listed as one of the coaches in the Barren River Area Volleyball Organization and met the girl while he was a coach with the BRAVO league, according to court records and a biography that was posted on BRAVO’s website Wednesday night, but has since been taken down.
The juvenile revealed to police Wednesday that she had sneaked out of her house and Gifford had picked her up on multiple occasions within the past month and that she had sex with Gifford at his home, according to court records.
Court records show Gifford admitted to police Wednesday that he had sex with the juvenile on five occasions.
Gifford was ordered to stay away from and have no contact with the alleged victim or her family and “not be around anyone under 18 unless with a responsible adult” and not to possess any weapons or firearms, consume alcohol or illegal substances, Potter said this morning.
Gifford is in Warren County Regional Jail in lieu of a $25,000 cash bond, according to online jail records. That bond was not reduced by Judge Brent Potter, who cited the nature of the charges.
