Duncan Wood, a senior at the Gatton Academy of Mathematics and Science in Kentucky at WKU, has been selected to perform with the All-American Marching Band in 2012 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City.

Wood, the son of Stockton and Patricia Wood of Maysville, will be playing mellophone in the 86th annual Macy’s parade on Nov. 22. He was selected for the All-American Marching Band through an audition tape and a resumé.

While at the Gatton Academy, he has been a member of WKU’s Big Red Marching Band as well as concert and symphonic bands. At Mason County High School, he was a member of the concert, marching, pep and jazz bands.

“It’s a true honor to have been chosen to represent Kentucky in an event such as this,” Wood said. “I’ve put a lot of work into improving my musicianship, and I’d like to thank the Mason County and WKU music programs for their instruction and support.”

Wood also plays French horn, trumpet, oboe, sousaphone and guitar. He was third chair in Kentucky’s All-State Symphonic Band last year playing French horn.

“Duncan is an excellent example of how students who are strong in math and science usually excel in the arts and humanities as well,” said Dr. Tim Gott, director of the Gatton Academy. “Indeed, it is extremely important for students to pursue their diverse passions so that they may integrate those strengths and become more balanced, creative and innovative citizens.”
