Katy Perry fans will enjoy ‘Part of Me’

With Justin Bieber, Miley Cyrus and even the Jonas Brothers having already received the concert/documentary 3-D treatment, it kind of makes sense that Katy Perry would be an addition to the genre.
Here is an artist who broke on to the scene with the flirtatious “I Kissed a Girl” and followed it up with a CD that included five No. 1 singles ( a record for a female artist). She’s also been the center of a high profile marriage and subsequent divorce with actor/comedian Russell Brand.

It’s all covered in “Katy Perry: Part of Me” a solid entry into the recent slew of concert films that will please her fans, and perhaps win over a few new ones.
The film begins on a bad note, with video testimonials that paint Perry as an influence that would rival Elvis, the Beatles or Michael Jackson. But once the film turns its focus to Perry’s family and her rise in popularity it becomes an intriguing bit of film making.
To Perry’s credit she allows the curtain to draw back, giving filmmakers an intimate peek into her year long 2011 tour. Interviews with her family and her religious roots (her father is a pastor), are actually insightful.
Also interesting is watching Perry bounce from record label to record label as studio heads tried to make her the next Alanis Morrisette or the next Avril Lavigne. It’s a nice testimonial to the riggers of the music industry and Perry’s determination to make a name for herself in a brutal business.
We also get to see the ups and downs of Perry’s brief marriage. An interview with the singer sheds some light on the break-up, although I think there could have been a little more insight.
All this is sandwiched around footage from the tour, an elaborate show that showcases Perry’s cheerful persona and considerable talents.

I’ll concede it all probably went down easier for me because I’m a fan of her work, but I think this is a good enough that you don’t have to know any of her music to appreciate her story.
