BGHS blanks East

Keely Vincent jokingly made a bet with her mother that if the freshman outfielder hit a home run, she’d get a tattoo.

Well, fire up the ink gun.

Vincent’s three-run shot in the fourth sparked Bowling Green’s offense in a 10-0 win at Warren East on Thursday night.

Vincent laughed at the prospect of a new tattoo, but knew how important her home run was in BG’s win.

“It took me a second to realize if it was out,” she said. “I was just listening to the coaches. They told me to wait back and don’t try to kill it, just easy swing. When I listen to them, I get the right hits that I want.”

The Lady Purples (4-3, 1-0 District 14) scored five in the fourth to open things up, then tacked on a single run in the sixth and three more in the seventh.

The Lady Raiders (1-3, 0-1 District 14) committed seven errors and left seven runners on base.

“Grade-wise, yeah, we’re young, but I tell people all the time, ‘I don’t want to hear it,’ ” WEHS coach Philip McKinney said. “Playing-wise, we’re not young. It’s one of those things, ‘Well, they threw it away because they’re young.’ Well, if they throw it away in a varsity game, they’re young. If they throw it away in a freshman game, it’s still a mistake, right?”

Up 1-0 in the fourth, BG scored with two outs when an errant pickoff throw to third with the bases loaded allowed Tori Dillard to score.

Vincent then reached out and popped an 0-1 pitch over the fence in center to make it 5-0.

Sarah Brooks hit an infield single to short, went to second on a wild pitch, took third on a pitch in the dirt and scored when the throw sailed into left field.

Brooks also walked with two outs in the sixth, went to second on a wild pitch and scored when Brittany Vaughn reached on an error to short.

In the seventh, Kathryn Dowling and Dillard singled to start the frame. Tessa Lindsey reached on an error that allowed courtesy runner Lexie Wheeler to score.

Dillard scored on a foul ball pop-up to first by tagging and Lindsey scored when the throw home from first rolled to the backstop.

“It was important for us to get this early win and just feel how the district is going to play out this year,” Vincent said. “Just see how the competition is around here.”

Madison Reese took the loss for WEHS after coming on in relief for starter Emily Turner. Turner was lifted in the second after colliding with catcher Chelsea Martin on a pop-up.

MacKenzie Brumit and Downing combined on the shutout for BGHS. Downing allowed one hit in four innings.

“(My team has) got to understand and everybody outside the fence has to understand we’re playing ball,” McKinney said. “This is who we got, this is who wanted to be here, so we’re going to play ball. This is going to be the varsity for a lot of swings and a lot of innings for the next several years.”

The Lady Purples head to South Warren this weekend to take part in the Spartan Invitational. Bowling Green plays University Heights at 6 p.m. today.

East travels to Metcalfe County for a 6 p.m. contest today.
