Congratulations to local veterans on their awards

Kentucky native and Iraq War veteran Miki Padgett wasn’t seeking any recognition when he was deployed to that country.
He simply wanted to go do his time for God and country, look out for himself and his buddies and return home safely.
On Friday, just three days before he is to return to another war zone in Afghanistan, Padgett received the Purple Heart for injuries he suffered during a tour in Iraq in 2007.
Padgett of Bowling Green served in the Marines before joining an Army tour in Iraq. While there, he was injured four times by improvised explosive devices, suffering concussions and traumatic brain injuries, but avoiding long-term brain damage.
The presentation of this award from U.S. Rep. Brett Guthrie, R-Ky., had to be a very special moment for Padgett and his family.
While some would have a hard time getting over such an injury, which is understandable, Padgett is using the award to move forward from his injuries.
Padgett, who is also a Western Kentucky University graduate, said the ceremony was more for his family. He would’ve been happy receiving the decoration privately.
Padgett’s attitude coincides with that of so many veterans who are modest about their achievements and don’t seek the limelight.
Nevertheless, he is deserving of this award and the ceremony.
Also that day, Lucas veteran Daniel Wilson, was also given service medals by Guthrie on Friday. Wilson served in Iraq from 2006-07 and was awarded the Army Achievement medal and the Army Commendation medal.
Wilson should be commended for his service and we know that he and his family are very proud of the award bestowed upon him.
These two men are American heroes. They went to war and returned home in one piece. They deserve these awards and we wish Padgett a safe tour in Afghanistan and a safe return to his family when his tour is over.
