WKU swimmers sweep meet

The Western Kentucky swimming and diving teams swept the competition in a three-team meet with Marshall and Fairmont State on Saturday at Frederick A. Fitch Natatorium in Huntington, W.Va.

The Lady Toppers claimed a 193-107 over Marshall and a 240-42 win against Fairmont State. On the men’s side, the Hilltoppers edged Fairmont State 145-86. The women improve to 4-1 on the season while the men are now 3-1.

Along with the victories, five Lady Toppers combined to break three pool records at the Frederick A. Fitch Natatorium. The quartet of Allie Duff, Claire Conlon, Kristiana Feeser and Paige Drazga touched in at 1 minute, 45.74 seconds to set the record in the 200-yard medley relay while junior Alex Van Oost finished the 200 back in a record 2:01.77. Duff then added a new mark in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:06.53.

Also highlighting the women’s day was the performance of freshman Susan Marquess. The Hopkinsville native picked up first-place finishes against Marshall in the 100 free (53.64), the 200 free (1:52.97) and the 500 free (5:00.09).

Along with her pool record in the 200 IM, Duff also place first in the 100 back with a time of 57.10. Van Oost finished runner up in the event, stopping the clock in 58.00.

Freshman swimmer Claire Conlon finished runner-up in both the 100 breast (1:04.40) and the 200 breast (2:22.19).

On the men’s side, sophomore Heitor Rodrigues picked up event wins in the 100 free (46.25) and 50 free (21.22). Other Hilltoppers to turn in first-place finishes included Adam Dajka in the 1,000 free with a time of 9:45.72 and Chris Donahue in the 100 breast with a time of 59.95.

Senior Adam Pendry also won the 200 butterfly when he stopped the clock at 1:58.07. Sam Dalton placed second with a time of 1:58.09. Chris Housden turned in a time of 51.51 in the 100 back to earn a first-place finish

The men’s swimming team swam exhibition times in the final five individual events of the meet.

In diving, junior Caitlin Dean led the Lady Toppers with a first-place finish in the 3-meter diving event with a score of 256.87. Dean was also the top finisher for the women on the 1-meter with a score of 255.07. WKU senior Vinnie Rominger swept the men’s diving events with score of 307.95 on the 3-meter and 316.65 on the 1-meter.

Both teams started off the meet with first-place finishes in the 200 medley relay and closed out the event with identical finishes in the 200 freestyle relay.

WKU next competes in 2012 when they take on Florida Atlantic, IUPUI and Nova Southeastern in Fort Lauderdale, Fla, on Jan. 10 at 1 p.m.

Meredith to play

in all-star game

Jordan Meredith, an eighth-grader at Bowling Green Junior High School, has been selected to play in the 2012 Eastbay Youth All-American Bowl.

The game takes place Jan. 8 at the Alamodome in San Antonio, and Meredith was one of 35 players from the eastern half of the United States selected to play in the contest.

The 6-foot-1, 228-pound lineman played for the state of Kentucky against Illinois in the all-state game Nov. 26, a 44-0 Kentucky win.
