A man who allegedly shot a woman before turning the gun on himself in October was indicted Wednesday by a Warren County grand jury on a count of first-degree assault.

Joseph Ricky Crouch, 60, address unknown, was formally charged by the grand jury in connection with the Oct. 23 incident at the 1216 Nutwood St. home of Brenda K. Maxie.

The indictment, based on testimony from Detective Jared Merriss of the Bowling Green Police Department, alleges that Crouch shot Maxie, 46, in the chest with a handgun.

City police received a call for help at 7:54 p.m. the night of the shooting from a woman, and when officers arrived, they found Crouch lying in the front yard and Maxie inside the home.

Crouch and Maxie – who were reportedly romantically involved at one point – had been arguing on the front porch of the home just before the shootings occurred, according to police.
