Director Hannah Hadley is seeking youth participants ages 7-18 for the following roles in Vera Morris’s adaptation of Frances Hodgson Burnett’s “Sara Crew” aka A Little Princess:
Sara Crew (F): the little princess, arrives from India as a new pupil in Miss Minchin’s Select Seminary for Young Ladies in London. Falls from prosperity after the death of her father in India leads to the loss of the family’s fortune. She is forced into servitude to repay… her debts to the school, but never loses her feeling of self-worth.
Becky (F): servant at Miss Minchin’s school, young and uneducated, overlooked and treaded upon by Miss Minchin and Lavinia. Heart of gold and fascinated by Sara.
Miss Minchin (F): Headmistress of Miss Minchin’s Select Seminary for Young Ladies in London. Passionate about the education and propriety of the young girls, but her ambition leads to cruelty. She forces Sara into servitude after the loss of Sara’s father’s fortune.
Miss Amelia (F): Miss Minchin’s sister, second in command at the school. Compassionate to the needs of the girls but allows her fear of her sister to cloud her judgment.
Ermengarde (F): pupil at the school and teased by Lavinia because of her poor school work. Dislikes her studies but not unintelligent. Befriends Sara and wishes to help Sara out of her difficult situation.
Lavinia (F): former golden pupil until Sara arrives and takes Lavinia’s place. Uses any opportunity to degrade Sara, Ermengarde and Becky or anyone she feels she can victimize without consequence. Delighted by Sara’s fall from grace.
Jessie (F): pupil; Lavinia’s best friend and so the only girl who stands up to Lavinia
Alice (F): another pupil following Lavinia and becomes a friend of Sara
Lottie (F): another pupil, youngest of the group and prone to fits and tantrums
Mr. Barrow (M): attorney with the law firm of Barrow and Skipworth representing Sara’s father, Captain Crew. Very business oriented and delivers the bad news that Sara’s father has died and the family fortune has vanished.
Cook (M/F): works for Miss Minchin. Gives orders to Becky and Sara once she is placed into servitude. Enjoys exerting power over the girls
Mr. Carrisford (M): neighbor to the school. Former associate of Captain Crew and takes an interest in Sara, the little girl living in the attic.
Ram Das (M): works for Mr. Carrisford, takes interest in Sara and serves as a reminder of her former life in India
Perkins (M/F): servant to Mr. Carrisford, aids Ram Das in providing a little comfort to Sara
Mr. Carmichael (M): neighbor across the street from the school, works for Mr. Carrisford
Mrs. Carmichael (F): his wife; interested in the school and the well-being of the young girls
For examples of accent work, see My Fair Lady (Eliza before and after), Bride and Prejudice (or anything Bali wood), Oliver Twist, anything Jane Austen, even Harry Potter or Pirates of the Caribbean. We will be using high British, Cockney and Indian accents. A good effort at auditions is appreciated, but don’t worry. We’ll work on it during rehearsals too.
With appropriate turnout, this production may be double cast. The cast list should be up by the Friday of audition week. Rehearsals will begin in the New Year. The show will open February 23rd and run through March 4th with school day performances Feb. 28th and 29th. Please complete the attached audition form to bring to auditions along with a current photo. The audition will be a cold read, so show up with a good attitude ready to have fun!
