In what could be the final meeting before a few seats on the Bowling Green Board of Commissioners change following the Nov. 8 election, commissioners are set to vote Tuesday on several items.

Up for approval will be a bid by Holland Inc. of Bowling Green for street drainage improvements in the Covington area. Holland submitted a bid to do the work for $503,738.94, within the city’s budget for the project.

The commission approved the project in September after hearing several concerns from residents.

The drainage plan calls for a basin to be built between 616 and 626 Covington St. The basin is expected to be 2.5 acres wide and 16 feet deep. It is expected to alleviate major flooding for at least 60 years.

Neighbors to the area said the basin was needed. However, they wanted to make sure it was done as well as it could be and would fit in with the neighborhood.

The area is prone to major flooding and several residents have experienced extensive property damage in recent flood events.

Billboards

The commission will also vote to institute a billboard moratorium for the city.

According to a letter sent from Steve Hunter, executive director of City-County Planning and Zoning, to Mayor Joe Denning, the Billboard Sign Committee has been studying the adoption of a spacing and cap requirement. After several months of discussion, the committee has requested that a 12-month moratorium be placed on the approval of billboard advertising permits as well as the creation of any new billboard lots.

The commission is expected to hear more on the moratorium at its Tuesday afternoon work session.

In August, the commission approved that billboards placed in the city must be 2,500 feet away from one another. Before the amendment, billboards were only required to be separated by 500 feet.
