WKU golfers qualify for 2011 National Championships

Three Western Kentucky University teams have qualified for the Collegiate Golf Alliance’s 2011 National Collegiate Golf Championship Nov. 11-13 in Las Vegas.

Defending national champions Adam Whitt and Matt Morrison captured the WKU faculty and staff division in the local qualifying tournament Sept. 30 at CrossWinds Golf Course and will return to Las Vegas to defend their national title in the two-person scramble format. Steve White and Billy Hurt won the alumni/community division.

In the student division tournament, held Oct. 1 at Park Mammoth Cave Valley Golf Course, Joseph Stumph of Cave City and Taylor Richard of Owensboro finished first to advance to the national tournament.

Second-place and third-place teams in all divisions are as follows: Dale Rigby/Steve Nagy and David Jones/Currie Martin, faculty and staff; Jeff Foster/Derek Schmitz and Kelly Remaly/Jason Gault, alumni and community; and Brent Smith/Nathan Smith, both of Mammoth Cave, and Austin Meredith of Brownsville/Craig Cassady of Smiths Grove, student.

WKU teams have been successful in the NCGC in recent years. In addition to their national title in 2010, Whitt and Morrison were national runners-up in 2009. Also in the faculty and staff division, Peter St. Pierre and Gary Meszaros won the national championship in 2006; Peter St. Pierre and Steve Nagy were national runners-up in 2007; and Chris Brown and Jason Owen finished third in 2008. In 2009, Billy and Jake Hurt finished fifth in the alumni and community division while Will Brown and Chris Kendall were national runners-up in the student division.
