Bra display meant to raise awareness

We read with some concern a letter in Wednesday’s paper expressing issues with our Bra-morial in front of the Western Kentucky Diagnostic Imaging Center on Scottsville Road.
We have undertaken this effort in cooperation with the American Cancer Society for the second consecutive year in hopes to raise awareness to an issue that we, unfortunately, deal with on a fairly regular basis. It seems that the display has received some attention.

Breast cancer, unfortunately, strikes somewhere in the neighborhood of 1 out of every 8 women. This is a sobering statistic. In no way do we wish to make light of the issue of the impact of this terrible disease. However, we feel, along with many whose support we have thankfully received, that displays such as this and other efforts around the country will help increase public awareness and as a result bring more people to become personally aware of this problem and to access appropriate health care.
In the event that we can achieve earlier diagnosis and possibly save a life as a result of this effort, we feel that we have accomplished our goal. In no way do we wish to insult the community by some display. However, we feel a greater insult would be to possibly miss the opportunity to bring a person to earlier cancer detection and possible life-saving intervention.
We hope that our display will be seen in light of these concerns which we feel supersede some sensitivity toward modesty that may be an issue for some people. We would like to see these undergarments filled as opposed to empty which is the case in the event of mastectomy and death which occurs in later stages of breast cancer.
Thank you very much.
