The Kentucky Museum at Western Kentucky University is participating in “Remembering the Civil War,” a community-wide celebration of the Civil War’s Sesquicentennial (150th) Anniversary from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 17.

The event will include several Civil War-related activities for families along with period dancing, soldier demonstrations and a 30-minute film viewing of “A Call to War,” which documents the lives of two soldiers, one from each side of the war.

Featured guest Robert Bell will present “Kentucky’s African American Soldiers during the Civil War” from 1 to 2 p.m. Bell is a living historian and charter member of the 12th US Colored Heavy Artillery (USCHA), Reactivated.  The 12th USCHA serves as the educational outreach arm of the Camp Nelson Heritage Foundation. He is also a member of the US Colored Troops Living History Association, a national group dedicated to the preservation of the History of African American men who served during the Civil War.

“We are very pleased to have Mr. Bell join us,” said Christy Spurlock, Education Curator for the Kentucky Museum. “His program will offer a critical piece of American History that merits recognition.”

The program is a collaborative effort with several organizations, including Lost River Cave, L&N Depot, Riverview at Hobson Grove, The Presbyterian Church, Zebra Graphics and Fountain Square Players.
