Sue Kathryn Green Scarbrough

A celebration of life service for Sue Kathryn Green Scarbrough will be at 10 a.m. Monday, August 29, at Centenary United Methodist Church, with Dr. Norma Quinn, Senior Pastor and The Reverend Sue Long, officiating, in Lawton, Oklahoma. A second service will be held in her hometown of Morgantown, KY, to be scheduled for early fall.

Mrs. Scarbrough died Sunday, August 21, 2011, in Oklahoma City with family by her side.

She was born March 6, 1937, in Rochester, Kentucky to Alma and Jack Green and raised as the seventh child of ten – five brothers and five sisters. She graduated from Butler County High School where she played the drums in the first Butler County High School Band, and was also a cheerleader, a majorette, and Miss Butler County. Following high school she attended and graduated from cosmetology school and worked in two of Kentucky’s finest hair styling salons in Lexington, KY and Bowling Green, KY. She maintained her cosmetology license throughout her life and gave most all of her grandchildren their first haircut. She married the late Joe D. Scarbrough and together they raised six children and traveled the United Stated and Europe as a military family stationed in Kentucky, Washington, D.C. and Schwaebisch Gmuend, Germany. They were also foster parents to more that six foster children.

Upon military retirement in 1974, Sue and Joe moved the family to Lawton, Oklahoma where she lived until May of 2011. During her life in Lawton she worked as an assistant manager for Braum’s Ice Cream and Dairy Stores, opened her own flower and gift shop with her sister Brenda, and worked as a sales associate for Midwest Furniture. She enjoyed bowling in a league with beloved friends and other widowers. She was an avid sports fan, was passionate about OU football and Kentucky basketball, and was known for her spirited conversations about politics and public service. She was a member of Western Hills Christian Church until her illness.

She is preceded in death by her husband Joe D. Scarbrough and is survived by her children, Suzanne & Mike Hogan, of Potomac Falls, Virginia, Terri & Allen Carlsen of Clinton, TN, Denise & Bobby Bradley, of Oklahoma City, OK, Lori & Kip Cummins, Elgin, OK, Scott and Laura Scarbrough, of Arizona, Lynn & Dane Brandt, Ft. Collins, CO, Danny & Ann Branham, of Lexington, KY. She is also survived by twenty-five grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, five brothers and sisters – Bill & Kay Green, Doreen Roberts, Bobby & Thelma Green, Brenda and Juergen Klein, and Sherry & Roger West, four sisters-in-law, four brothers-in-law, and several nieces and nephews.
