Dr. Lisa E. Murrell

Dr. Lisa Ellen Murrell, 43, died at 2:22 p.m. July 18, 2011, at her home.

The Bowling Green native was born Aug. 10, 1967. She worked for the Office of Graduate Studies and Research at Western Kentucky University in the Wetherby Administration Building. She completed her undergraduate degree in music education at WKU in August 1989. She also earned a Bachelor of Science degree in middle grades education from WKU in May 1990. In 1992, she completed her Master of Arts in education with a major in music from WKU. In the summer of 1995, Lisa was hired in the Office of Graduate Studies and Research by Dr. Elmer Gray. It was there she began to pursue her Doctorate in higher education at the University of Louisville. Lisa satisfactorily passed the examinations required for the degree of Doctor of Education with all the rights, privileges and honors pertaining thereto. Her dissertation was approved Sept. 5, 2000, and her doctorate was given from the University of Louisville on Dec. 23, 2000. Dr. Murrell continued working for the Office of Graduate Studies and Research at Western until she became ill. She was a daughter of Allen and Estelle Murrell, who survive.

Memorial service to celebrate Lisa’s life is at 2 p.m. Friday at Broadway United Methodist Church. Visitation is from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. Friday at the church. Johnson-Vaughn-Phelps Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to the Office of Graduate Studies and Research at Western Kentucky University to set up scholarships in memory of Dr. Lisa Murrell, or to Hospice of Southern Kentucky, 5872 Scottsville Rd., Bowling Green KY, 42104

Other survivors include a brother, Leslie Murrell and his wife, Susan, of Lexington; an aunt, Edith Flowers of Bowling Green; an uncle, Sidney Clark and his wife, Muriel, of Canon City, Colo.; two nephews, Michael and Andrew Murrell; two nieces, Stephanie Murrell Stillwell and Felicia Murrell Lawrence, all of Bowling Green; and several great-nieces and great-nephews.
