The Bowling Green Police Department has been made aware of a caller ID scam affecting Bowling Green, Warren County and surrounding areas, including Allen and Barren counties, according to a news release from the BGPD.

The city’s 911 call center began receiving calls Thursday from residents who told police that the Ava, Mo., Police Department’s telephone number was displayed on their caller ID, but that the message was from a business calling itself “South East Financial Credit Union.”

The automated message prompts people to enter their debit or credit card numbers. If they did, it is possible their account numbers have been captured by the scammer. A scammer can use any phone number to do this, but the scammer in this case used the phone number of an out-of-state police department to hide his or her true identity, according to the release.

“We strongly encourage people not to give out any of their personal identifiers or their checking account, credit card or debit card information over the phone or in e-mail to people that they have not initiated the contact with,” police spokeswoman Officer Monica Woods said. “If they are ever in doubt, they can contact their banking institution or the police department.”

Drug crime — Bowling Green police arrested Melissa Cole, 26, 1016 Parkland Court, on Thursday on charges of first-degree possession of a controlled substance, according to police records.

Officer David Marshall responded to 436 Dishman Lane in reference to a drug incident.

When police entered the residence, the man who answered the door, Jarred Conner, was smoking a marijuana cigarette, the report said. Conner allowed Sgt. Josh Hughes to come inside the residence and granted permission to search the home, according to the report. Conner was cited to court on misdemeanor charges possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia.

While inside the home, police searched a purse that contained 11.5 methadone pills and 11 lorazepam.

Burglary — A Bowling Green woman told city police Thursday that her apartment in the 1200 block of North Lee Drive had been burglarized.

The woman reported that an Xbox 360, a Spring USB Internet card and a laptop computer, together valued at $1,045, were missing from her bedroom.

Nothing else was missing. Police dusted for fingerprints.

The case is closed due to a lack of investigative leads.

Theft — A Bowling Green woman told city police that she left her home in the 700 block of Patton Way at about 2 p.m. March 3 and when she returned the door had been kicked in.

The woman and her roommates were able to determine that a laptop computer, two flat-screen TVs, an Xbox 360 Elite, $700 and assorted hats were missing. The value of the items stolen is estimated to be $2,390.

The case is open.
