On Thursday, February 3, Jonathan Jeffrey will discuss his book Bowling Green Stock Car Racing. Bowling Green became the city of speed immediately after World War II. Stock car racing took the city by storm in its inaugural season of 1951, drawing crowds of up to 7,000 in a city of only 18,000. This book documents the history of stock car racing in Bowling Green and the emergence of the raceway at Beech Bend Park.
Also on February 3, Nancy Richey will discuss her book Images of America: Barren County. Nancy Richey is a native of the Mount Hermon community in Barren County. The book contains 200 vintage photographs from various eras throughout Barren County’s history.
Carlton Jackson will discuss his upcoming book on Thursday, February 24. Bittersweet Journey: Andrew Jackson’s Inaugural Trip, l829 is about Jackson’s inaugural journey to Washington. He was elected as president in November, l828. He and his wife Rachel had decided to leave the Hermitage on Christmas Eve, l828, heading for Washington. Unfortunately, that was the day Rachel was buried at the Hermitage. Andrew had to make this journey without the woman he loved.
Portia Pennington and Amy Wood have compiled a collection of photographs chronicling the last fifty years of the twentieth century by photographer Tommy Hughes, who captured Bowling Green and its people throughout his professional career. They will discuss their book Bowling Green Since 1950 at the library on Thursday, February 24.
