Hands clapping and swaying, members of the Homecoming choir at Eastwood Baptist Church on Wednesday belted out lyrics to “Big Mighty God.”

The church, nestled behind Fairview Avenue at 500 Eastwood Ave., is set to present its 2010 Gospel Homecoming on Sunday.

“People really enjoy this,” said Phyllis Ellis, wife of Dana Ellis, minister of worship at the church. “It gives a feeling of home.”

The fourth annual homecoming, set in the same style as the popular Gaither Homecomings, will feature a variety of gospel songs – such as “Just a Little Talk With Jesus” and “I Go to the Rock” – sung by quartets, soloists and a 100-piece Homecoming choir.

“We’re doing a little more sing-a-long songs, like a hymn book,” Dana Ellis said.

The event also will feature the South Union Bluegrass Band and three emcees – Spud, Harry and a new friend, Hoss – who are set to keep those in attendance laughing.

Doors open at 5:15 p.m. Sunday with the program starting at 6 p.m. The program is scheduled to run about 90 minutes, and a dessert fellowship featuring more than 130 pies, cakes and other desserts will follow.

Almost 800 attended the homecoming last year, and the church is looking once again to fill the pews, Dana Ellis said.

“We’re humbled by the outpouring of community support for this event,” he said. “It shows the love that people have for songs of joy and encouragement.”

Dana Ellis said the program is open to the public and most of those who attend are familiar with the songs. “They grew up with them and want to share them,” he said.

“This gives a taste of the Gospel without being in your face,” he said. “It’s a laid-back way to sing about God’s love.

“People can expect a fun time, enthusiasm and the joy of the Lord.”
