GLASGOW — Tavion Parrish aims to please his customers.
Whether it’s flipping burgers at the local fast-food joint, or lighting up the scoreboard on Friday nights in Glasgow, Parrish is a fan favorite.
“I like scoring TDs and breakin’ ’em,” he says nonchalantly. “I just like doing that.”
And Parrish is expected to do a lot more scoring in 2010 when he leads the Scotties into battle as their feature running back.
As a junior in 2009, Parrish ran for 803 yards and nine touchdowns and caught six passes for 127 yards on his way to one receiving score.
“He’s just – he runs hard, he hits at full speed – I mean, he’s just one of those guys, he has what I call ‘gamespeed,’ ” GHS coach Rick Wood said. “He’s not a track guy, he’s not a 4.5, 4.4 (in the 40-yard dash) type sprinter. But he’s extremely quick, he’s got great moves, durability and I think most backs have one thing that he has – he’s got great vision.”
Parrish also has increased his size. A winter and summer full of workouts has added nearly 30 pounds to his 6-foot frame.
“I’ve just been in here, workin’ with coach Wood,” Parrish explained. “Coach Wood has told me to get in the weight room, be more physical. It just happened like that. I was checkin’ my weight and it was like crazy.”
With a little more meat on his bones and a little higher expectations surrounding him and his team, Parrish seems to be headed for a monster season. He and the Scotties have come a long way since 2008.
“When we went 0-11?” he asks. “I mean, it was a really hard time for us as a team. We was workin’ hard at practice and just couldn’t find a way to get it done. For me, we was crushed. We couldn’t even win a game.
“It was hard at that time. People were just doubting us about our program. Now, I think we’ve made a very big jump, in terms of improvements.”
Parrish started playing football in the fourth grade and came up as a cornerback before transitioning to running back. Over the past few years he gave up on basketball to focus on his football efforts in hopes of earning a college football scholarship.
“I think I can do certain things to help my team win,” he said. “I used to play basketball, I stopped playing just to focus on football just because that’s what I wanna do in college. I just wanted to stay focused in that so I could do better. (In college) I’ll play wherever they want me to be.”
But before playing at the next level becomes a reality, Parrish has his sights set on taking Glasgow to the next level. The Scotties are two years removed from a winless season and one year away from a 5-6 campaign.
“Our next step – this whole summer we’ve been workin’ hard, trying to get more physical,” he said. “Everybody’s trying to pull their own weight. Our next step is to try and go undefeated. That’s our next step. Try and win a championship.”
