Opening Friday as part of the Gallery Hop, the Capitol Arts Houchens Gallery will present the mixed media work of Andee Rudloff and the paintings of Darlene Postula. The opening reception will be from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday. The exhibit will continue through Sept. 7. A listing of other galleries participating in the hop is at www.bowlinggreengalleryhop.com. From Friday through Sept. 13, the capitol’s Mezzanine Gallery will feature a staff art show, featuring paintings, photography, needleworks and graphic arts.
Exhibits this month at the Warren County Public Library include the works of Bowling Green native Granville Mitchell in the Porter Cafe at the main library, 1225 State St. A panel from The Dream Rocket quilt project is on display at the Bob Kirby Branch, 175 Iron Skillet Court. Students and teachers from all over the country participated in creating the world’s largest quilt with the theme Dare to Dream. The panel exhibited at the Kirby Branch was made by first-graders at McNeill Elementary School.
The Presbyterian Church is featuring artwork by the residents of Bellewood, a Presbyterian children’s home, from Saturday to Sept. 9. The exhibit is coordinated by Monica Crawford, local artist and Bellewood art instructor. An opening reception honoring the artists will be in the Fellowship Hall on Sunday following the 11 a.m. service. The exhibit is open to the public and may be seen at the church, 10th Avenue entrance, from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.
The Student Traveling Exhibition: Final Destination will be on exhibit at the VSA arts of Kentucky Gallery through Aug. 21, with a reception coinciding with the Bowling Green Gallery Hop from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday. An art exhibit titled “Art is a Jewel of Many Facets” will close Friday at the Presbyterian Church Gallery at 10th Avenue and State Street. The exhibit will feature the works of artists David Lamont and Melanie Sunshine Smith. A closing reception will be from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday in conjunction with the third 2010 Bowling Green Gallery Hop.
This month, the Duncan Center Museum & Art Gallery in Greenville is hosting the work of Kentucky artist Harlan Hubbard. Hubbard was born close to the Ohio River in 1900. The Factory at Cave City will feature the Moon Woods Band from 8 p.m. to midnight on the first Saturday of each month. The facility is on U.S. 31-W, just north of the Ky. 90 intersection across from Dollar General Store.
Saturday Night Karaoke with Wayne Hallet will be from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. each Saturday at Burgers on the Square in Franklin. The smoke-free facility is for the entire family, with the bar for adults only after 9 p.m. For more information, go to www.burgers onthesquare.com.

Miss Kitty’s, 3315 Louisville Road, has live bands beginning at 9 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays; Wednesdays feature karaoke and Thursdays feature acoustic music, nightly specials and pool tables. Beech Bend Summer Concerts will continue with Bailey Birge on Saturday and Clinton Spalding on Sunday. The concerts are included in the cost of admission. For more information, go to www.beech bend.com.
Live country music and dancing will be from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Friday at the Old Alvaton School on Scottsville Road. Finger foods and light refreshments will be provided for a $5 cover charge to cover expenses.
The Farewell Drifters will perform at 7 p.m. Saturday in the Arts on Main concert in Scottsville.
Early tickets are on sale for the International Newgrass Festival’s three-day return to Ballance Farms on Aug. 20-22. The lineup will include Curtis Burch, a member with Sam Bush in the band that started it all, New Grass Revival, as well as Cadillac Sky, Sierra Hull, The Greencards, Mountain Heart, Bearfoot, Dread Clampitt, Missy Raines and the New Hip, The Farewell Drifters, and Bob Lucas and Family. Hazel Johnson Band featuring the widow of New Grass Revival co-founder Courtney Johnson will kick off the festival Aug. 20. Country music and dance will be featured from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Friday and Aug. 27 at the Old Alvaton School on Scottsville Road. A live country band will provide music for two-step, waltz, square dance and a variety of others, with line dancing during the band’s breaks. Nondancers are also welcome. Curtis Martin’s Simply Country Band will perform traditional country music from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Saturdays at the Butler County Adult Education facility. There will be a $5 charge and concessions will be available at the event.
Barren River Lake State Resort Park will have an open mic jam session the first Tuesday of each month. All musicians are invited to participate in the Tuesday Tunes Jam Sessions from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. inside the Louie B. Nunn Lodge and The Driftwood Restaurant. Dinner hours are 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Registration is under way for the Olde Stone Run for P.R.I.D.E. on Aug. 20-21. Entry fee is $30 and includes a pasta party Aug. 20. There is a 5K Wheelchair Race at 7:30 a.m. Aug. 21; 7:35 a.m. 5K Walk, 5K Run, Pump & Run and 8:30 a.m. Kid’s 1 Mile Fun Run. Second Saturday Street Fair is around Fountain Square Park this weekend. The Downtown Merchants and Professionals organized the event, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, when there will be inflatables and games for kids, horse and carriage rides, both for a modest fee. There will be live music, sidewalk sales by merchants as well as vendors, including jewelry makers and outdoor furniture. Food vendors also are expected to be set up.
Catherine Coulter, best-selling mystery writer, will speak at 6 p.m. tonight at Christ Episcopal Church. The event is sponsored by the Warren County Public Library, where tickets for the free event are available.
Mammoth Cave National Park will waive fees for the self-guided Mammoth Cave Discovery Tour on Saturday and Sunday. Visitors must pick up their free tickets at the visitor center ticket office between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. and walk to the Historic Entrance to begin their tour. The Mammoth Cave Discovery Tour enters the cave at the Historic Entrance, then traces through Houchins Narrows, the Rotunda, nitre mining artifacts, Audubon Avenue and Rafinesque Hall. The park will offer free tours again Aug. 25 and Nov. 11.
Barren River Lake State Resort Park will have Family Night Out(side) in the campground Friday through Sunday. The weekend will begin with a campfire program Friday, followed by an owl prowl. Participants will be able to choose from a variety of workshops Saturday, including basic birding, creepy crawly creatures, canoeing, goodness snakes alive, tree-mendous trees and more. Saturday evening will conclude with an outdoor cooking potluck and Amazing Campground race. On Sunday morning, participants can participate in one more workshop before the event closes. Bridge, Bunko, Scrabble, Checkers and other games can be played at the Card Party and Game Day at the Houchens Center from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 30. Reservations are required for the event, which costs $10 and will include morning refreshments, luncheon, afternoon snack, table prizes and door prizes. Reservations are being taken for Riverview at Hobson Grove’s “Nature’s Bounty in Textiles” at 11:30 a.m. Aug. 24. Sandy Staebell, the registrar and collections curator at Western Kentucky University’s Kentucky Museum, will discuss how plants and animals interpret nature as design elements and pattern names in many historic textiles. Attendees may bring their own quilts and coverlets with natural themes to display and discuss. Tickets are $15 and reservations are required by calling Riverview at 843-5565.
Chuck Barris will discuss his latest book, “Della,” at 6 p.m. Aug. 19 at the Warren County Public Library on State Street. Barris is a former television show creator and producer and is the author of several books, including “Confessions of a Dangerous Mind” (adapted into a major motion picture) and the New York Times best-selling novel “You and Me, Babe.”
The Glasgow Business & Professional Women’s Club is accepting vendors for its 32nd annual arts, crafts and gifts show Sept. 25 on the public square. Registration is required by Sept. 15 and placement of vendors is assigned on a first reserve basis. Each participant is asked to provide display stands, tables and chairs. All booths are about 12×12 and are $35 for arts, crafts and gifts vendors; $50 for food vendors. Confirmation, map and parking permit will be mailed by Sept. 17. No refunds after Sept. 1.
Military Appreciation Night at Bowling Green Ballpark will be Monday, when $3 from each ticket sold will go to the Wounded Warrior Project. Also going to the project will be money raised from a silent auction Friday through Monday that includes Hot Rods memorabilia and Major League Baseball items from such players as Tampa Bay Rays All-Star Evan Longoria. The American Red Cross has blood drives each Friday at its office, 430 Center St., from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and the second Saturday of each month from 8 a.m. to noon.
