GLASGOW — Maj. Rondel R. “Soup” Oliver, retired from the U.S. Army National Guard, 86, of Glasgow died Aug. 8, 2010, at T.J. Samson Community Hospital.
The Barren County native was a veteran of both World War II and the Korean War, and was a former commander of the 623rd Field Artillery in Glasgow. Following his military retirement, he worked with Lindsey General Tire Co., L.L. Morris Oil Well Supply Co. and Page Brothers Oil Well Supply. He also worked with a number of area churches and was active in various civic organizations. He was a son of the late Rondel R. Oliver Sr. and Nettie Jewell Oliver. He was preceded in death by a son, Rondel David Oliver; and a brother-in-law, B.H. Weaver.
Funeral is at 11 a.m. Thursday at Hatcher & Saddler Funeral Home, with burial in Glasgow Municipal Cemetery. Military honors will be provided by the 623rd Field Artillery Honor Guard. Visitation begins at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
Survivors include his wife, Wiley Pulliam Oliver; a son, Charles Robert Oliver and his wife, Kelly, of Glasgow; a daughter, Pamela Jo Depp and her husband, William, of Mount Juliet, Tenn.; four grandchildren, Jonathan Depp and his wife, Amanda, Owen Taylor Griffith, Lauren Scout Oliver and Robert Todd Oliver; two sisters, Sue Travis and her husband, Freddie, of Glasgow, and Betty Weaver of Horse Cave; a brother, Dr. William J. Oliver and his wife, Jeannie, of Louisville; and several nieces and nephews.
