Mammoth Cave National Park staff continue to assess damages and make repairs where possible, following the May 1-2 flood.  The canoe launch and picnic area are open at Dennison Ferry Day-Use Area. Joppa Ridge Road is open.  All cave tours are operating on their normal schedule and along traditional routes.

“We are going to need more time to get Houchin Ferry running,” said Superintendent Patrick Reed.  “The new cable is on order and we will install it as soon as possible.  We apologize for the inconvenience.”

Houchin Ferry Road South is open, but only for access to the river.  The pavilion picnic tables floated away and the campground is in disrepair.

“Houchin Ferry Campground is located right on the flood plane and needs a significant amount of work,” added Reed.  “The topography of the campground has changed, washed out in some places and filled in in others.  A low grassy area that was a favorite spot for tenters is now about two higher than it was before the flood.”

Though park trails on both sides of Green River were impacted by the flood, Cedar Sink is the only trail in the park that is closed.  Visitors are urged to use extra caution in places where trails may be blocked or eroded.

“Some of our recent trail work was just washed away,” said Reed.  “The new horse-bridge across First Creek was lifted out of the banks and ended up in First Creek Lake.”

Ugly Creek/Little Jordan Road suffered washout damage and is closed between Wilkerson Cemetery and Little Jordan Cemetery.
