NEWTON, N.J. — Betty G. McDonough, 87, of Newton, died May 5, 2010, at a Newton nursing home.
The Portland, Pa., native lived in Blairstown for more than 40 years before retiring to Scottsville, Ky. She had been a resident of Newton since 2007. She received her B.S. in education from East Stroudsburg University and her master’s degree from Lehigh University. A teacher and guidance counselor in Blairstown and North Warren High School for 39 years, Betty retired in 1992. Upon her retirement, Betty and her husband, “Mac,” enjoyed traveling. They reached their goal of traveling to all 50 states with a trip to Alaska in 2005. Betty was a longtime member of the Blairstown Presbyterian Church, a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Bowling Green, Ky., and was currently a member of the First United Methodist Church of Newton. Active in the Blair Women’s Club for many years, Betty was a member of the Pennsylvania Jazz Society and a jazz society in Nashville. She and her husband participated often in the many activities at Bristol Glen. She was a daughter of the late Fred Gardner and Lottie Houck Gardner and the wife of the late William Cornwell Jr. She was preceded in death by a brother, Woodrow Gardner.
Memorial service is at 11 a.m. EST today at First United Methodist Church in Newton. Smith-McCracken Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Survivors include her husband of 46 years, Walter “Mac” J. McDonough; a daughter, Terri Cornwell and her husband, Mark Courtney, of Forest, Va.; a son, B. Lee Cornwell and his wife, Barbara, of Blairstown; a stepson, Walter Stettler and his wife, Kathy, of Bloomsbury; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; a sister, Ruth Ribble, of Portland, Pa.; a sister-in-law, Joan Coffin, of Bozeman, Mont.; and several nieces and nephews.
